Why can't I eat what I want?

Lightbulb moment...

One of my muse ideas decided to pop up.

The other day, I was reading this article and by the end I was rolling my eyes.

It seems we are told what to eat, when to eat and how to eat these days.

What happened to being responsible for your own actions?

I'm guilty of eating most of these items, on occasion and in moderation. Isn't that the key? Moderation?

It's like Cookie Monster - it's a sometimes food.

It got me thinking though. We all know there are foods that are bad for us. But what foods are bad for you as an individual? What foods do you avoid because you just cannot stand them?

MY top 5 foods to avoid are:

1. Cucumber. Not sure what it is about it, but it tastes absolutely horrible to me!

2. Bananas. This possibly stems from a really bad immune system as a kid so there were a few cases of antibiotics.

3. Custard. Ugh, the texture and flavour just doesn't do it for me.

4. Mangoes. Meh. Just don't like 'em.

5. Old school cheese sticks. You know, the fake cheese? It's bad enough in slices, let alone chunks. Bleh.

But seriously, do we have to be told constantly what to do? Are we not adults? Do we not have brains? Just because there is an obesity "epidemic" across the world, why must we all be made to feel like crap because we have healthy balanced diets and enjoy a variety of foods?

  1. I love this! So true, I am sick of being told that sugar or wheat is going to kill me! Wow that article is terrible, I do get what it is trying to say but so badly written! I am all about minimal processed foods and maximum colour, it works for us!

    1. I have to admit I sat down and ate a handful of those rice snacks she mentions after writing this lol

  2. I hate peas. With a passion! And I can't stomach tomato, purely because of the texture, it really grosses me out! I used to not like cream, but now I love it. I wish I didn't though!

    #teamIBOT was here!

    1. In my email your reply came up as just Kylie so I thought you were my sister-in-law lol. She doesn't like pea or tomato either although likes tomato sauce.

  3. I agree with you - but I have been surprised about my own journey of learning about healthy food over the past couple of years.
I'm no dummy (no really, I'm not) but it was only about 3 years ago that I realised just how much sugar was in fruit juice - I wouldn't stand for anyone in my family having soft drink at breakfast time, or drinking bottles of soft drink each day, but I can't tell you how much orange or apple juice I would guzzle at a time.
And it is just in the last year or so that I have realised what a difference to maintaining (and losing) weight reducing the amount of starchy carbs like potatos and rice and bread can make.
And my more recent foray into calorie counting has me gasping in horror at what a piece or two of cake can do to maintaining a "reasonable" daily calorie intake.
I don't follow any one path religiously, but it has taken my breath away just how little awareness I have had of the food that I eat - I mean sure, veges and whole foods = good, but being more aware of the detail can make all the difference.

    1. I'm in the process of indulging in starchy carbs to maintain my weight. My doctor has run all sorts of tests but can't find out why I am still losing weight. I am at 12kg since March through illness (which we all had and recovered from). I just think saying you should never eat something is going a tad too far. I do tend to agree on the drinks like vitamin water though.

  4. I'm so confused by it all. Don't eat fat, eat good fat, eat bread, don't eat bread. I think it is fairly obvious what we should and shouldn't eat but we just need to eat in moderation and limit the portion sizes

    1. Remember when they said avocados were bad for you? Then five minutes later, it's like "Oh, it's good fat?" It's so ridiculous!

  6. 'shrooms. I don't care how awesome they are, according to the whole world. I hate 'em.
As for mangoes, they're my faves. You must be weird. I bet you like mushrooms, too.

  9. With you on the bananas - blech - mind you, I pretended to eat them with my oldest as I was the only parent and I didn't want to put her off them.

With my youngest, I allowed my oldest and hubby to take the fall for me!
